no wind fish

That time of year for the no wind fish to present itself..

The water is still cold, but even at 7pm last night the air was warm enough to paddle board with just boardies on and catch a few mackerel for dinner. Using my custom home made rod (carbon batten and some foam pipe cladding). I caught 5 in 40 mins without much effort. I did drop two though, the new small SUP is pretty tippy for fishing when you are trying to unhook a fish, and then kill it and put it in the bag. I won't lie, the ones that got away were not huge!

SUP's have got to be the easiest ways to catch Mackies, just paddle out to where you think they are (not too shallow), drop your line till it hits the bottom and then bring it up a foot or so, and then just bounce the line whilst you drift down current. Even leaving the line out to trawl as you paddle back can catch some.

Rod wise, you need a really short one, so cut down and existing one or buy a cheap kids one. Bait wise, just use lures or even better, a set of cheap feathers. Results everytime, and you cant beat eating mackrel caught within the hour for taste...
